In yet another case defining what dowry is, the Supreme Court has held that demand for presents to a child do not fall within the ambit of dowry and that mere evidence that a woman has been subjected to harassment does not in itself make out a case of dowry death as defined by Section 304B of the Indian Penal Code.

Dowry for Fake Passport

Chennai: Jinisha has complained that she is being harassed for 1500000 INR so that her husband, Gobi Manalan, a Sri Lankan Tamil, can obtain a fake passport and emigrate to Canada. Her father had given him 50 sovereigns of gold, gold ornaments and 100000 in cash on the occasion of her marriage in 2003.

Husband’s Impotence Not an Excuse for Wife’s Death

Allahabad: A court rejected Kuldeep Singhal’s contention that his wife committed suicide because of sexual frustration caused by his impotency and said that it could leave him open to a charge of abetment of suicide. He seems to have been trying to use his alleged impotency to get out of charges under sections 304 B and 498 A of the IPC.

Bigamist Drives Wife Insane

Hindupur: Hemalatha, 22, committed suicide because of being farrassed for more dowry. She was married to Nagesh, a software engineer. Her inlaws, Aswathappa and Santhamma, have been arrested.
